Florida: The Motorcyclist’s Dream
Florida stands as a beacon for motorcycle enthusiasts. The sublime weather coupled with top-tier attractions cements its position as the second most popular state for riders, boasting over 645,000 registered motorcycles. Whether you're a resident or just passing through, it's vital to understand Florida's motorcycle-specific laws.
1. Motorcycle Endorsement is Mandatory: A standard driver’s license isn't enough. Secure a motorcycle endorsement for any two- or three-wheeled motorcycle above 50cc.
2. Helmet Laws: If you're below 21, helmets are compulsory. Above 21? They're optional, but you'll need a minimum $10,000 in medical benefits coverage.
3. Eye Protection is Non-negotiable: Helmets might be optional, but protective eyewear isn’t. Safety first!
4. No Lane Splitting: In Florida, passing between two lanes of traffic, or “lane splitting”, is illegal.
5. Riding Abreast: Only two motorcycles can ride side-by-side in a single lane.
6. Stunt Restrictions: Keep both wheels grounded. No “wheelies” or stunts.
7. Passenger Guidelines: Designated seats and footrests are a must for passengers.
8. Listening Device Limitations: They shouldn't obstruct ambient noise. One ear should always be free.
9. Headlights On at All Times: Ensure better visibility and safety.
10. Mirrors are Essential: At least 200 feet visibility to the rear is mandatory.
