The 13-foot-tall statue celebrates Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, the founder of a small school in the early 1900s that evolved into Bethune-Cookman University, a civil rights and women's rights pioneer, and the champion of Black Daytona Beach residents who fought for their most basic needs and rights. The bronze sculpture is 829-pounds and the granite pedestal base is 14,050-pounds.
