About

Within the past 50 years, manatees have become as much a symbol of Florida as
oranges and Disney World. This program examines how and why this happened and
how humans and manatees maintain a tense relationship in an environment in
which manatees continue to be imperiled. Steve Noll, Ph.D. is an instructional
professor in the history department at the University of Florida, where he has taught
since 1993. He earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of Florida in 1991.

He has published 4 books - the latest, published in April 2022, is entitled Writing
for the Public Good, and is an edited collection of op-ed pieces by David Colburn and Senator Bob Graham. He also travels around the state giving public talks through Florida Humanities.
