About
New Smyrna Golf Club was designed in 1953 by Donald Ross and is recognized as part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail. The goal at New Smyrna Golf Club is as simple as it is effective: make sure golfers have fun. A Donald Ross design and a member of the Florida Historic Golf Trail, New Smyrna has its roots in classic golf course architecture, providing a multitude of ways to play the layout. A player-friendly design, the course can test low handicappers, playing 6,567 yards from the tips, but the priority at New Smyrna is on providing players of all skill levels a chance to score. The fairways aren’t overly tight but with water and numerous doglegs, finding the short grass off the tee is a vital first step to scoring well. Featuring Ross’ famed turtle-back greens, the putting surfaces are open in the front, allowing players to run the ball up. That being said, the paspalum greens and collars are tightly mowed, allowing balls to roll into bunkers. The greatest testament to New Smyrna’s commitment to playability was a 2016 renovation that included the installation of new greens and a downsizing of many of the course’s bunkers. While the layout has great appeal to the “average” golfer, it continues as the annual host of the Indian River Open, an event that counts former British Open champion Mark Calcavecchia and Golf Channel personality Charlie Rymer among its past champions.
